Dr S. Devotta, Former director of CSIR-NEERI, Nagpur (2003-2008) serves as a Chemical & Environmental Engineering Consultant. He has immensely contributed to the field of Energy and Environment, particularly in Heat pumps and industrial energy conservation, Alternatives to CFCs, Chemical process development, Process engineering simulation, and Global environmental policy and protocols. He has served and continues to serve in many prestigious National & International Committees e.g. Supreme Court Monitoring Committee (SCMC) on Hazardous Waste, DST Task Force on Green Chemistry, GoI Steering Committee on Montreal Protocol, UNEP Technical Option Committee, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), World Bank Ozone Operations Research Group (OORG), WHO, and International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR). Dr. Devotta also coauthored a highly acclaimed book “Thermodynamic Design Data for Heat Pump Systems” published by Pergamon Press, Oxford, UK (1982) as well as some more Books, Monograph and Chapters in international reference books. He has also published more than hundred and fifty papers mostly in International journals of repute. He was also the Regional Editor for Applied Thermal Engineering, and Editorial Board Member of International Journal of Refrigeration, published by Elsevier, UK, which are highly reputed international journals. Dr. Devotta was awarded, as a team leader, 2003 CSIR Technology of the Year Award. He also received the citation from IPCC, which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 as well as the Prime Minister of India. As an appreciation for the technical and scientific leadership in Environment Protection, he was awarded the prestigious United States Environment Protection Agency (USEPA) “Stratospheric Ozone Protection Award” for 1997 and received commendation letters from the Executive Director of UNEP, Nairobi. He has guided 25 students for Ph.D. and ME/M. Tech. in Chemical & Environmental Engineering.

Talk Abstract

Ozone layer depletion and global warming are two environmental issues of primary concern. Both of these environmental problems have a common cause—human activities that release gases into and alter the atmosphere. Ozone breakdown is mainly caused by CFC gases which are used for refrigerators and insulation. The intricacies of the two phenomenon shall be discussed. The talk will focus on the possible alternatives for CFCs.
