Dr. Varma was born in Madhya Pradesh, India in 1953. He received the B.E. degree in Electronics Engineering from Maulana Azad College of Technology Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh (currently known as Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology Bhopal), INDIA and M.S. degree in from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, INDIA. He is working as a Scientist in Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute Pilani, India since 1977. At present, he is Chief Scientist and group leader of Industrial Electronics Group. His research interests focus on motor drives, high voltage pulsars and power supplies. He has developed a number of systems related to his area of interest and also published a number of research papers in national and international journals.
Dr. Rahul Verma gave a detailed description of various aspects of power electronic systems. The series of lectures mainly dealt with overview of power semiconductor devices like Diodes, Thyristors, GTO’s, IGBT’s and drivers and Snubber circuits. Main focus was given to the design methods of Conversion, Rectification, Inversion and Cycloconversion power processing systems. He also dealt with various Fundamental Switching Regulators – Buck, Boost and Inverter Topologies and other topologies like Push-Pull and Forward Converters, Half and Full-Bridge Converters and Flyback Converters. He also touched upon the Transformer and Magnetic Design and Switching of devices using PWM techniques. Motor drive applications for DC Motors, Induction Motors and Synchronous Motors were also elaborated.
